Where do we begin?

Before I delve into the approach I use in talk therapy, it’s important to understand what its function is.

As we go about our daily lives, our every thought, feeling and action is dictated by the inner working of our subconscious mind or “core” beliefs. These core beliefs, hidden from view are formed through our earliest experiences in life.

In order to shift these beliefs, we have to first know what they are, and what purpose they served our younger selves.

Through Compassionate Inquiry we begin to shift the way we see things like depression & anxiety, even addiction. Throwing away the disease model that tells us that “genetics” determine our lives, rather than environment & experience. The disease model disempowers people, robbing them of their innate ability to heal.

“The purpose of Compassionate Inquiry is to drill down to the core stories people tell themselves – to get them to see what story they are telling themselves unconsciously; what those beliefs are, where they came from; and guide them to the possibility of letting go of those stories, or letting go of the hold those stories have on them … That’s what Compassionate Inquiry is.”

– Dr. Gabor Maté

Becoming consciously aware of the inner workings of our own minds, seeing our patterns and beliefs play out in our daily lives we are better able to effect change.

The purpose of talk therapy therefore is to correctly frame the problem allowing us the opportunity to solve it.

Taking our new understanding of how our mind works and how it was formed into account and learning to view ourselves with compassion instead of judgment we can now move to the next step.

The Anchor Based Approach (ABA) provides both a theoretical framework for understanding the human experience as well as practical tools for implementing small- and large-scale changes. Through a comprehensive set of principles, and techniques and most importantly consistent daily practice you will be empowered to heal yourself.

As talk therapy forms the first part of a holistic approach to wellness, one of the key techniques you will learn is the practice of breathwork.
